Ohio State Buckeyes will face Texas Longhorns in the opening game of the 2025 season. With the matchup locked in for August, all eyes will be on the Buckeyes as they begin their title defense against a Texas squad hungry to make an early statement.
But not everyone is thrilled about this clash. Legendary sportscaster Urban Meyer has voiced his concerns, suggesting that this early-season battle could spell trouble for one of these powerhouse programs right out of the gate.

Urban Meyer Isn’t in Favor of Ohio State vs. Texas
With Ohio State and Texas both standing among college football’s elite, Meyer is sounding the alarm on what’s at stake. He worries that a season-opening loss could derail one of these powerhouse programs before their campaign even gets off the ground.
He even addressed the large audience that this matchup would garner; however, he still opposes the idea in his appearance on the “Triple Option Podcast.”

But with #CFP selection so crucial, will teams shy away from scheduling such tough non-conference games?

“You’re opening with Texas next year. Why?” Meyer asked. “Other than it’s great for the game, it’s good for the fans, it’s good for the players. But you’re evaluated on one thing: not good. You’re evaluated at the end of the season. So I’m worried that these teams play these just God-awful schedules, horrific schedules, and no one’s talking about that.”
“There’s got to be some kind of analytics about to say, ‘This game is worth this,’ so you play it. Boise State and SMU can solve all those problems. They can go and schedule the big dogs and there will be no more conversation about, ‘Are they worthy?’ Same with maybe an Indiana. They all had great years, but go play Tennessee and the (Michigan) Wolverines and whoever. Texas,” he added.
The Buckeyes held the No. 8 position in the recent College Football Playoff and were one of the four teams from the Big Ten to make it in the postseason. They only lost against Oregon and Michigan in the regular season.
Ryan Day Gave a Brief Response to Meyer’s Statement
Meyer fears that if the Buckeyes stumble against the Longhorns, their Big Ten dominance could be up for grabs. However, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day isn’t sweating it. Addressing the concern in a recent press conference, Day broke down why the Buckeyes are embracing such a high-stakes opener.
“We play nine conference games in the Big Ten, and then when you add Texas, you’re talking about 10 real games on the schedule,” he said. “That matters. One less loss from somebody in the league and the wear and tear of the season as well.”

The college football world is buzzing with debates over scheduling dilemmas, especially after the Indiana Hoosiers secured a playoff spot without facing a single ranked opponent.
Meyer’s concern? That a similar scenario could overshadow the Buckeyes’ playoff chances. With the 2025 season looming, all eyes are on how it will unfold.
