One of the biggest supporters of Kyle Whittingham taking over the Michigan Wolverines is none other than Urban Meyer. It’s unsurprising, as they worked closely together while Meyer was the head coach of the Utah Utes in the early 2000s. At the time, Whittingham was the Utes’ defensive coordinator, and he was the one to take over the team following Meyer’s departure to Florida.
Meyer has expressed his support for Whittingham, stating that he’s exactly the right man to bring stability to the program, following Sherrone Moore’s scandal at Ann Arbor. However, he himself has expressed that he’s concerned about one fact about Whittingham’s background as he steps into the Wolverines’ job:
“My only concern is Kyle has been at one spot for 30 years,” Urban Meyer said. “He played at BYU. The only time he was out of the state of Utah was a couple of years at Idaho State. Coached for [Ron] McBride, coached for me, and then he became a head coach for a long time,” said Meyer this week on the ‘Triple Option’ podcast.
He also said that Whittingham might find it surprising to deal with the press surrounding a program like Michigan’s, when compared to the kind of attention Utah gets from the national media.

Kyle Whittingham Expects Bryce Underwood To Return In 2026
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Kyle Whittingham revealed that he has already spoken with Bryce Underwood about his future with the Michigan Wolverines. He said that he went down to the Citrus Bowl and came away happy with his conversation with the quarterback.
“I went down to the bowl site when they were down at the Citrus Bowl and sat down with Bryce — what a great young man and what a great attitude,” Whittingham said on The Rich Eisen Show. “He was saying all the right things, and I just had a good feeling at that time that he was more than likely going to return with us. That gives us a great start on retention and trying to make as many players in the program as we can stick with us.”
Kyle Whittingham had already made clear in his first press conference as the Wolverines’ head coach that roster retention was his priority this offseason. It seems he’s making inroads on that front.
