Longtime college football head coach Urban Meyer believes that losing a great coach has a greater impact on a program than losing a great player does.
While appearing on the popular YouTube channel “The Triple Option” alongside Rob Stone, Meyer outlined how it was generally expected that good players would leave after a few seasons. However, losing a good position coach or coordinator can cause long-term stress for the head coach if not handled correctly.

What Did Urban Meyer Say on ‘The Triple Option’?
Meyer is a three-time national champion coach who has also won the Big Ten Championship three times and the SEC Championship on two occasions. Now retired, he has transitioned into a media role in recent years.
He made it clear that a head coach feels more of an impact when a good coach departs the staff compared to when a good player leaves a program.
“Losing a great player is expected because great players are fluid, you know, they come and go. You know, it’s just the way it works. You get them for three years, and they go to the NFL Draft.”
“If you don’t replace that great coach, the wear and tear on the head coach is overwhelming,” Meyer detailed.
The conversation began with Stone discussing how many coaches the Ohio State Buckeyes would be losing next year. Several coaches on both sides of the ball have already confirmed that they will be leaving the program for other college and NFL opportunities next year.
Ohio State Buckeyes Coaching Losses
The Buckeyes won the national championship this past season, but the coaching staff is set to look drastically different next year.
With numerous coaches departing, including offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, head coach Ryan Day will be tasked with assembling another winning staff that can compete for another title and finally get a win against rival Michigan next year.
