Urban Meyer is viewed by many fans and analysts as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. He won three national championships as a head coach, two with Florida and one with Ohio State. However, he has not coached at the college level since 2018.
After leaving the Buckeyes, he took a few years off from coaching before taking the job with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL. However, following a series of controversies, as well as a poor 2-11 record, Meyer was fired by the Jaguars during the season. Meyer has not coached since.
In his post-coaching career, Meyer is one of the hosts of “The Triple Option” podcast. There, he gives his takes on the state of the college football world, while often telling stories from his time as a coach. However, there are still teams that are interested in his services.
On Wednesday, in the latest episode of “The Triple Option,” Meyer admitted that he was approached last season about taking a job as a general manager. He did not say which team approached him but explained why he did not take the job.
Meyer spoke about how he took a few phone calls with the team and asked what the job would be like. They told him his position would mostly involve speaking with player agents. Meyer had a funny quote when faced with the prospect of taking that sort of job. Dealing with the agents of players who are often younger than 18 years old did not seem like something that was appealing to him.
“And I thought, ‘I’d rather step on a rusty nail and pull it out myself.'”
Urban Meyer Speaks About Colorado’s Culture Under Deion Sanders
Urban Meyer is one of the most outspoken people in the college football community. In a clip he posted on X on Thursday, Meyer spoke about Deion Sanders and the culture he has built with the Colorado Buffaloes. He admitted that while he does not love all of the flash, he believes the Buffaloes will succeed next season.
“I got to go backstage and watched them practice,” Meyer said. “I see the watches and the cars and all of the flash — it’s just not me. But when I saw what went on behind the scenes, there’s a culture there. He’s tough on them, man. He’s demanding of that team. That’s what blew my mind.
