Former Ohio State HC Questions Buckeyes’ Risky Non-Conference Game vs. Texas Longhorns in 2025 CFB Season

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer details his concern for the Buckeyes' 2025 season opener against the Texas Longhorns.

Longtime Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is worried about the Buckeyes opening game of the season against the Texas Longhorns.

While appearing alongside Rob Stone and Mark Ingram II on the popular podcast “The Triple Option,” Meyer detailed how the difficult non-conference matchup could prove costly to Ohio State’s chances of playing in the College Football Playoff later next season.

What Did Urban Meyer Say About the Difficult Ohio State Schedule?

Ohio State is a member of the Big Ten Conference, while Texas plays in the SEC. This past season, the Buckeyes finished with a 14-2 overall record, going 7-2 against fellow Big Ten opponents. Meanwhile, the Longhorns went 13-3 overall and 7-1 against SEC competition. Both teams qualified for the College Football Playoff as well.

Meyer made clear that it was a difficult game for the Buckeyes, especially to open the season, and one not fully needed by the school, considering the teams compete in different conferences. The portion of the podcast in reference also featured Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day.

“The thing I am worried about, Ryan, is this: Why would you dare play — you’re opening with, I think, Texas next year — why?” he asked.

Although Meyer did concede that this matchup would be great for the fans, the players, and for college football in general, he did outline how Day’s job security will come down to wins he accumulates in the playoffs.

“Once again, you’re evaluated on one thing. Not good. You’re evaluated at the end of the season, so I’m worried,” Meyer added.

    Ohio State Buckeyes 2025 Outlook

The Buckeyes won the College Football Playoff National Championship this past season. The Buckeyes had the No. 1 ranked defense in points against per game and the No. 10 offense in points per game.

However, with various players likely moving to the NFL and numerous coaches deciding to leave the program this offseason, including offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, the Buckeyes are expected to look quite different next year.

It will be on Day and the Ohio State executives to replace the departing talent and coaches this offseason by means of the transfer portal and recruiting.

Should the Buckeyes struggle in doing so, it is evident from Meyer’s recent words that the opening game of the campaign against powerhouse Texas could prove difficult and problematic for the iconic Ohio program.
