There’s no question that Bill Belichick has drawn a lot of attention, both good and bad, to North Carolina since becoming the University’s head football coach back in December. From the Hard Knocks situation to a ton of different alleged controversies with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, it’s safe to say that UNC has been in the spotlight this offseason.
While Belichick has received criticism from many, it would appear that the Chancellor of North Carolina is backing Belichick and likes the attention that the Hall of Fame coach and his personal life are bringing to the University.
UNC Chancellor Backs Bill Belichick as Program Soaks in National Attention
Lee Roberts, who has been the chancellor of UNC since the beginning of 2024, said this to the media amid all the Belichick drama.
“We wanted, when we hired Coach Belichick, to bring Carolina football to another level. We increased the price of our season tickets, and we sold them out. We’re delighted about all the attention being paid to Carolina football.”

Regardless of how you feel about Belichick’s personal life and the ongoings of his and Jordon Hudson’s relationship, there’s no doubt that the main reason people are paying attention to the football team is because they expect on-field success.
Belichick is a Hall of Fame NFL head coach. In his time with the New England Patriots, he held a total of 333-141 with 31 postseason victories and six Super Bowl titles. He’s won everywhere he’s coached, and that should translate to the college level.
In Belichick’s introductory press conference, he said that UNC football will be run using an NFL Model and even referred to the Tar Heels as the 33rd NFL team.

So, while yes, Bill’s personal life has brought a lot of attention to the Tar Heels, I think Roberts’ main point here was that Belichick is at UNC to win football games, and that’s what has garnered the most attention from at least the North Carolina fan base.
