UGA Football Recruiting: Kirby Smart Faces New Challenge As Bulldogs Lose Top Spot Despite 4-Star Addition

Four-star linebacker Elijah Littlejohn recently flipped his commitment from Penn State to the Georgia Bulldogs earlier this week, as reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports. Littlejohn’s recruitment is of immense significance as far as Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs’ future CFB roster are concerned.

Despite this recruitment victory, Alabama has recently jumped Georgia in recruitment class rankings, claiming the top recruiting class spot in the SEC. The Crimson Tide, after catapulting in the rankings, pushed the Bulldogs down to second place in the conference and third nationally, trailing the likes of Alabama and USC.

The Bulldogs’ fall to the second spot could also be attributed to some turbulent recruitment news. Reportedly, five-star quarterback Jared Curtis could potentially flip on Georgia to commit to Vanderbilt as the December 3-5 early signing period looms large.

Meanwhile, the SEC currently has five programs inside the top ten recruiting class rankings, with Tennessee sitting at seventh and the likes of Texas A&M and Texas occupying the eighth and tenth spots, respectively.

LSU and Florida, who have been on the lookout for a new coach since firing their respective head coaches earlier this season, also make an appearance in the top 15.

Kirby Smart Says Departures Reflect Georgia’s Tough Football Culture

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, during a press conference last week, stated how the players who leave the Bulldogs’ program are a byproduct of the tough physical culture at Athens.

While indirectly talking about past departures like Carson Beck, Julio Humphrey, and Damon Wilson, Kirby made it clear how such withdrawals only further cement the ideology he is building at Georgia. He emphasized the program requires physicality, and the players who flake may not possess the required attributes that he’s looking for.

“The ones that want to leave? We schedule them. We try to get them on the schedule because when they wanna leave — because they’re not physical — that means they’re probably going to a place that’s not physical”, Kirby stated.

Smart’s football ideology is currently paying dividends as the Bulldogs are currently sitting 2nd in SEC rankings with an overall record of 10-1 in his tenth season as Georgia’s head coach. His contract extends through 2033, paying him roughly $13 million annually.
