Ty Simpson Reportedly Voted to Leadership Council, What This Means for the Potential Starting Alabama QB

With former all-conference quarterback Jalen Milroe headed to the NFL, head coach Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide are searching for a new starting quarterback. Based on recent events, veteran signal-caller Ty Simpson could be the man for the job.

Ty Simpson Voted to the Team Leadership Council

According to insider Brody Smoot, Simpson was recently voted to the team’s leadership council. In other words, he is one of the key leaders on the team and was voted so by his coaches and teammates.

Simpson is currently competing with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell for the starting gig, but this latest development could certainly suggest that Simpson has the inside track to the job.

In his career in Tuscaloosa, the Tennessee native has completed 29 passes on 49 attempts for 381 yards. He also has 22 carries for 130 yards and three rushing touchdowns on the ground. His leadership and experience could earn him the starting job this Fall.

The Tide Needs a Bounce-Back Season In 2025

DeBoer’s first season in Tuscaloosa did not go as planned. His team went just 9-4 overall (5-3 in conference). A sixth-place finish in the SEC, coupled with losses to Vanderbilt and a below-500 Oklahoma team, wasn’t exactly the best recipe for a championship. It was the first season that Alabama won less than 10 games since Nick Saban’s first season as head coach in Tuscaloosa (2007).

The team must bounce back strongly this season, and that will have to start under center. If Simpson can prove this spring and summer that he is the man for the job, DeBoer will have to stay on top of him to ensure the offense is performing at its best.

This isn’t exactly as if Michael Penix Jr. is again taking the reins for DeBoer at Washington. Although Simpson is a veteran, he has not started many games and will have to figure it out as he moves along.
