Is Ty Simpson Better Than Jalen Milroe? CFB Analyst Draws Comparisons Between Alabama QBs

The Alabama Crimson Tide had Jalen Milroe as its starting quarterback for two years. He has now moved to the NFL to achieve his dreams, joining the Seattle Seahawks.

However, in Kalen DeBoer’s second year as head coach following an underwhelming 9-4 record in 2024, he had to choose between Austin Mack, Ty Simpson, and 5-star quarterback Keelon Russell.

After a competitive quarterback competition during the offseason, it is fairly established that Simpson will be crowned the starting QB for Alabama’s 2025 college football season.

Drawing comparisons between Simpson and Milroe on Monday (Jun 30), analyst Clint Lamb said:

“They like the way that he commands the offense. He’s got the needed athleticism, the complementary athleticism, but he can also distribute the football, really, to all three levels. He can take advantage of all of your various styles of playmakers on offense. I just think they really like how he’s come along. And as far as operating Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb’s offense, he’s, I wouldn’t say he’s maybe necessarily a perfect fit, but I think he is a 10 times better fit than Jalen Milroe was.”

“And that doesn’t mean that he’s a better quarterback necessarily, or he’s going to be a better quarterback, but I mean, I just think that the way he wins is how Kalen DeBoer, Ryan Grubb want to win relative to what Jalen Milroe did, kind of his strength. So I think he’s going to have a productive year, because I think the offensive line is going to be really good. I think the run game is a lot more of a commitment to that. With Ryan Grubb, you know, you’ve got playmakers at wide receiver,” Lamb added.

Ty Simpson Weighs In on the Missing Factor in Alabama’s 2024 Season

After Nick Saban left Alabama’s legacy in Kalen DeBoer’s hands, fans were disappointed by how the first season went. While 9-4 is not a bad record, it’s not what the Crimson Tide fans expect.

In DeBoer’s second year as head coach, many predict things to be different, including quarterback Ty Simpson.

According to Roll Tide Wire‘s Steve Holley, Simpson admitted that the Alabama standard wasn’t met in the 2024 college football season, which resulted in one of the hardest off-seasons in four years.

“I just feel like we’re a very close group,” Simpson said. “Everybody hangs out with everybody when we don’t have football going on, and I feel like we’re hungry and have a chip on our shoulder. The Alabama Standard wasn’t (there) last year, losing three or four games, and we understand that. This offseason has been very, very hard, one of the hardest ones out of my four years there at ‘Bama. We understand that, hey, we need to bring this physicality back in the Alabama Way. So that’s what we’re trying to do and what our plan is in this upcoming season.”

Alabama will kick off the 2025 college football season against FSU on August 30.
