Is Ty Simpson Going To The Draft? What We Know About Alabama QB’s NFL Future

Ty Simpsom is going to the NFL. The quarterback’s stint as Alabama’s starter is likely at an end, as reports are that he told his coaches his decision to declare for the NFL Draft on Wednesday morning. Simpson was the Crimson Tide’s starter in the 2025 season, leading the team to an appearance in the SEC championship game and a College Football Playoff victory over Oklahoma. They eventually lost to Indiana in the Rose Bowl game.

The news was shared by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on his X account, where he wrote:

“Sources: Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is turning pro. He just informed the Alabama coaches of his decision,”

In 2025, Ty Simpson threw for 3567 (10th best in the nation), with 28th touchdowns (10th best in the nation too), and five interceptions (Tied 16th fewest in the FBS). His QBR of 76.0 was the 20th best in college football. For his efforts, he was awarded Second Team All-SEC honors.

The quarterback’s journey to the starting position was an unusual one, having joined the Crimson Tide back in 2022. He spent three seasons backing up first Bryce Young and then Jalen Milroe. At a point in 2023, it seemed like he would take over starting duties, but in the end, Nick Saban decided to stick with Milroe as a starter on their way to an SEC championship title.

Kalen DeBoer On Ty Simpson’s Performance During The Rose Bowl

Following the heavy 38-3 Rose Bowl defeat against Indiana, the press and fans immediately turned against Alabama’s offense and, understandably so, against Simpson. This is not the view taken by Kalen DeBoer, who, on the contrary, had nothing but kind words for the quarterback.

“I know he feels like he let down the team, and there’s no way that that’s the case. He went out there, tried to battle,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said of Simpson after the Rose Bowl loss. “That’s who he is, so I’m never going to let that be a thing where he lets us down in any way. So making sure he knows that.”

At one point in the season, Simpson was a favorite for the Heisman and for the first overall pick of this year’s NFL Draft. Now, Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza is the favored player to take that spot, with Dante Moore being the other highly coveted passer. Nonetheless, it’s expected that Simpson will be a first-round pick, contingent on his NFL Combine performance.
