The football world watched Shedeur Sanders slide down draft boards a few months ago. Reports of how he conducted himself surfaced after, and his father, Deion, finally addressed them this week.
Booger McFarland Responds To Coach Prime’s Defense of Shedeur Sanders
Thought by some to be an elite quarterbacking talent, Shedeur Sanders instead fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Many chalked it up to how confident-or arrogant-he ‘d been.
“When you sit up there and say something like, ‘He went into a meeting unprepared, like, ‘Dude, Shedeur Sanders. Who has had six different coordinators? Who has still functioned and gone up, leveled up, every time we brought somebody new in?’ And you’re gonna tell me he had on headphones,” Coach Prime said Monday on Asante Samuel’s “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast. “Shedeur? Anyone who knows my son understands he’s a professional.”
ESPN’s Booger McFarland backed Coach Prime’s reaction to the situation. The elder Sanders had coached his son for three years on the collegiate level for four seasons, including two at Colorado.
“I think it’s a coach, it’s a father defending his son, understanding what he heard, understanding that the Sanders name has kind of been slandered — especially during the pre-draft process — and everybody’s trying to figure out post-draft why Shedeur Sanders slid,” McFarland said Tuesday on “First Take.” “Here’s what I’ll say, though. I think some of this wasn’t made up.”
McFarland covered April’s NFL Draft for ESPN. He said he heard some of the same whispers that the elder Sanders was talking about and trusted his sources.
“I think two things can be true here,” McFarland said. “I think the information that was out on Shedeur Sanders came from a lot of people that a lot of people trust and people think are credible. I also think that Deion can’t believe or doesn’t believe that his son would do some of the things. … But I’ve got no problem with Deion defending his son because we all got kids, and, if our kids were being slandered or some of the things (were) said about Shedeur being said, we would defend them publicly also.”

Since landing in Cleveland, Shedeur Sanders hasn’t made much noise. He’s battling to prove himself in a crowded Browns signal-caller room that also includes veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson is part of that group, as well, but is rehabbing from an Achilles injury.
