Johnson began his coaching career in 1987 at Lewiston High School in Idaho and later served at his alma mater, the University of Idaho. His abilities as a recruiter and position coach stood out during his time at San Diego State, where he recruited future Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk and wide receiver Darnay Scott.
His collegiate coaching career also included stints at Southern Methodist University and the University of California, following an outstanding tenure at the University of Miami from 1996 to 2005.
Johnson coached great receivers Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, and Reggie Wayne at Miami and was instrumental in bringing safety Ed Reed to the program. His contributions were pivotal to the Hurricanes’ 2001 national championship win.
Johnson went to the New Orleans Saints as their wide receivers coach in 2006, marking his NFL debut. During his tenure, he coached players such as Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem, and Lance Moore. His coaching had a key role in the Saints’ offensive prowess, which climaxed in a Super Bowl victory in 2009.
Johnson reconciled with the collegiate ranks in 2011 as head coach of the Tulane Green Wave. Over four seasons, he guided the team to a 15-34 record. Despite the setbacks, his tenure was characterized by a dedication to restoring the program and making Tulane’s first bowl appearance in 11 years in 2013.
Johnson returned to the NFL after leaving Tulane, where he worked as the wide receivers coach for the Chicago Bears in 2016. He returned to the Saints in 2017 as a senior offensive assistant before taking on the role of wide receivers coach in 2021.
In February 2023, Johnson was named head coach of the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). He was appointed head coach of the Houston Roughnecks after the USFL and XFL merged to form the UFL.
