Can Trinidad Chambliss Play Another Year? All We Know About Ole Miss QB’s Eligibility Fight Amid CFP Run

Trinidad Chambliss has become a big name in college football after he led the Ole Miss Rebels to one of their best seasons in history, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff, followed by a dramatic win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to earn a spot in the semifinals. The quarterback came to Oxford in 2025 after two successful seasons with Division II Ferris State. In his very first season in Division I, he became SEC Newcomer of the Year.

While he’s having a blast this season, whether he’ll return for another season remains upto NCAA.

Can Trinidad Chambliss Play Another Year?

According to Pete Thamel, Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss have petitioned to the NCAA to allow him to play for another season, which will be his sixth. As per the NCAA rules, a player is allowed to play four seasons in atmost five years, given one medical redshirt.

Chambliss redshirted in 2021, missed 2022 due to medical issues, and played the remaining three years fine. In 2022, he was troubled with persistent respiratory problems that led to surgery.

As such, both the quarterback and the program want his 2022 season not to be counted or classified as a medical hardship season retroactively.

Thamel said the required documents have been submitted for the NCAA to review his case.

“Ole Miss has filed another letter to the NCAA on behalf of Trinidad Chambliss’ medical redshirt waiver request for a 6th year,” Thamel wrote. “The letter, via attorney Tom Mars, says in part: ‘Based on the ‘objective evidence’ submitted by Ole Miss, it would be absurd for the Committee to conclude that 91 pages of medical records and a detailed letter from Trinidad’s treating physician do not constitute ‘other appropriate medical documentation’ within the meaning of Bylaw 12.6.4.2.2.’

“There’s high stakes for Chambliss with the NCAA decision. He would be among the top players in the NCAA transfer portal and command millions for 2026 if he’s allowed another year of eligibility.”

What Ole Miss Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss Is Saying?

Trinidad Chambliss has publicly expressed his feelings regarding his case for eligibility, stating that he deserves another season, as he has only played three full seasons of college football.

“I feel like my case is very strong,” Chambliss said. “I don’t see a reason why they should deny it, frankly. I have a lot to back up what I’m stating, what I’m putting in front of them. It’s up to the NCAA. Out of my control. I have all my faith in Jesus Christ.

“I deserve it,” Chambliss said. “I’ve only played three seasons of college football. I feel like I deserve to play four. I redshirted in 2021. That was my freshman redshirt. Then I medically redshirted in 2022. Played in 2023, 2024, and this is 2025.”

The Ole Miss Rebels are also helping the quarterback get the NCAA waiver for the potential sixth season. It remains to be seen if the NCAA finds his case legitimate and awards him another year of college football.
