After winning the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s top wide receiver and the Bednarik Award as the Defensive Player of the Year earlier this week, Colorado Buffaloes two-way superstar Travis Hunter has won the 2024 Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in college football.
Travis Hunter Named the 2024 Heisman Trophy Winner
At a glitzy ceremony in New York City, Hunter capped off a remarkable, unprecedented season by receiving the 2024 Heisman Trophy. The Colorado standout took home the award for the most outstanding player in college football ahead of fellow finalists Ashton Jeanty, Dillon Gabriel, and Cam Ward.
Hunter is the first Colorado winner of college football’s greatest individual prize since running back Rashaan Salaam took home the Heisman Trophy for the Buffaloes following the 1994 season. He’s also the first winner to play for a Big 12 program since Oklahoma Sooners’ quarterback Kyler Murray in 2018.
The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner has etched his name into the college football records books, becoming just the second defensive player in the history of the prestigious award. Hunter joins former Michigan Wolverines cornerback Charles Woodson as the only player to take significant snaps on defense and earn the title of the most outstanding player in college football.
While Hunter is often compared to and discussed in the same conversation as Woodson, the truth is that the Colorado playmaker is one of one. He’s a unique entity who is equally comfortable torching defenses as a game-changing wide receiver as he is bolstering the Buffaloes secondary with his eye-popping feats of athleticism and football intelligence.
Hunter took home the Heisman Trophy after racking up 92 receptions for 1,152 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. The Colorado wide receiver posted seven 100+ receiving-yard games this year (and came up one short of an eighth) and even added a rushing touchdown (against the Utah Utes) to showcase his ludicrous abilities in all phases of the game.
Meanwhile, on defense, he tallied 11 passes defended to lead the Big 12, adding four interceptions to a resume that included three picks from the 2023 campaign. While the numbers alone are impressive, Hunter’s unnatural athletic ability has to be seen to be believed at times, making unreal plays seem commonplace.

After his exploits on the field this season, and despite missing out on the Maxwell Award to Boise State running back Jeanty, Hunter walked away with the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. The likely next step for the Colorado star is the 2025 NFL Draft.
