Travis Hunter’s 2024 Heisman Trophy win was historic on multiple levels. Playing under Deion Sanders, Hunter’s performances were magnified on the nanational stage. His unique role made him one of the most talked-about athletes in college football throughout the season.
But while Hunter’s case was strong, his Heisman win wasn’t without controversy. A large section of the college football community believed Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty had earned the award. The naysayers showed up again when Hunter was given a spot among legends like Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and more.
Hunter was presented with the official portrait that will be hung in the Heisman House among all the greats of college football. Bleacher Report posted the clip of Hunter being shown his portrait by Barry Sanders, among others.

It didn’t take long for some to take shots at him.
“Should be Jeanty,” a fan wrote.
“Does he even know wh’os that legend holding the pic?” another commented.
“Jeanty robbery,” a fan posted.
“Ruined my day,” another wrote.
“AI getting so real nowadays. they doing Jeanty wrong,” a fan commented.
“Jeanty got robbed,” a fan wrote.

The criticism and hatred are far from being unanimous, but it just shows that almost a year after Hunter won, some fans still can’t let him have his moment. While Jeanty was a strong candidate, he finished second in the voting.

Travis Hunter Thanked His Father During his Acceptance Speech
Travis Hunter was surrounded by his family during the ceremony. His wife was there for him, and so was his Colorado Buffaloes coach, Deion Sanders, among others. When Hunter took the mic, he thanked everyone who helped him get there and gave a special shoutout to his father.
“I want to say something to my father. He’s not here. But I know you’re watching on TV,” he said, tearfully. “Dad, I love you. All the stuff you went through, man. Now, look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man.”
“I know you wanted to be here and you can’t, but trust me, I got you,” he concluded. ”I’m bringing the trophy home. I love you.”
Travis Hunter’s father decided to stay home so his mother could attend the ceremony. The Heisman victory propelled Hunter to a higher level of fame, and since then, he has done nothing but prove that he deserved it.
