On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Buffalo Bulls quarterback C.J. Ogbonna entered his name in the transfer portal. The senior is transferring as a grad transfer after putting up 2,724 yards of total offense and 27 total touchdowns in the 2024 season. With plenty of QB-needy teams across the country, where will the Georgia native call home next?
Where Will C.J. Ogbonna Transfer?
After three seasons with the Bulls, Ogbonna posted this message on X: “I am officially in the transfer portal as a grad transfer! DM’s are open!”
So, which teams make sense for Ogbonna to go to?
Marshall Thundering Herd
The Marshall Thundering Herd lost a large portion of their roster when head coach Charles Huff left for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. They have yet to replace their star QB from last year, Braylon Braxton, and are definitely in the market for a player at the position.

Ogbonna’s skill set as both a passer and rusher could help the defending Sun Belt champs rebuild their roster. Not to mention the move to West Virginia would bring Ogbonna much closer to his home state of Georgia.
Syracuse Orange
This is an interesting spot for Ogbonna to land. The Syracuse Orange are currently waiting to hear whether the NCAA is going to grant star QB Kyle McCord another year of eligibility. If the NCAA denies McCord’s request, the Orange will have a big question mark at the position.
Ogbonna would have to compete for the starting role with LSU Tigers transfer Rickie Collins. But if he’s up for some competition, Syracuse could be Ogbonna’s best chance to start at a Power Four school.
Charlotte 49ers
The Charlotte 49ers lost starting quarterback Deshawn Purdie to the transfer portal earlier this offseason and could be looking for a veteran to take over this year. The 49ers have already brought in two transfer QBs, but Ogbonna could be the one-year band-aid they need to ensure that they are competitive in the AAC this season.
FAU Owls
The FAU Owls also lost their starter, Cam Fancher, to the transfer portal and desperately need a replacement at the position. Ogbonna brings the athleticism that is required in FAU’s offense and would be a great fit.
Kennesaw State Owls
The Kennesaw State Owls didn’t see much success in their first season as an FBS program, only winning two games. Ogbonna could go back to his home state of Georgia and try to help build Kennesaw into a competitive program.
