Tom Brady Backs Byron Leftwich After Coaching Move to Colorado

Tom Brady has voiced his support for Byron Leftwich following his new coaching opportunity with the Colorado Buffaloes under head coach Deion Sanders. Leftwich, previously Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator, played a pivotal role in the Buccaneers’ 2021 Super Bowl win alongside Brady.

His hiring aligns with Sanders’ vision of adding NFL experience to Colorado’s staff. Leftwich recently attended a Buffaloes practice in team apparel, fueling speculation about his role. While his official job role remains undisclosed, reports suggest he will collaborate with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as part of Colorado’s offensive development strategy.

Deion Sanders Adds Byron Leftwich to Colorado Staff, Tom Brady Reacts

Byron Leftwich is set to join the Colorado Buffaloes’ coaching staff, marking his return to coaching since his departure from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January 2023. Head coach Deion Sanders formally introduced Leftwich on Wednesday as the Buffaloes kicked off spring practices.

Brady has publicly supported Leftwich’s new opportunity, stating,

“Byron has a great presence about him. He’s a former quarterback. So I think so much of how he sees the game is through the eyes of the quarterback… He’s got a great understanding of the game, got a great work ethic, has great command and presence, and he’s a great coach.”

Leftwich, a former NFL quarterback, played nine seasons before transitioning into coaching. He began as a quarterbacks coach with the Arizona Cardinals before assuming the role of offensive coordinator for Tampa Bay in 2019.

During his tenure, he collaborated with Tom Brady and contributed to the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV victory. He was considered for multiple head coaching roles in 2021 before being dismissed in 2022. Leftwich joins a Colorado staff stacked with NFL experience, including Hall of Famers Sanders, Marshall Faulk, and Warren Sapp.

Deion Sanders Proposes NFL-Style Spring Games, But NCAA Rules Stand in the Way

Deion Sanders has introduced an intriguing idea—one borrowed from the NFL but currently prohibited by NCAA regulations.

On Monday, Sanders suggested that college football programs should follow the NFL preseason model by scrimmaging against other teams during spring practices.

“I would actually like to play the spring game against another team,” Sanders stated. “I’d like to style it like the pros… I think the public would be satisfied with that tremendously.”

However, the NCAA rules prevent this. NFL teams frequently hold joint practices, providing a valuable opportunity to compete against unfamiliar opponents. College programs, on the other hand, can only practice internally before their spring game.
