TJ Finley is once again changing schools as the Georgia State quarterback has planned to enter the transfer portal. He has previously joined LSU, Auburn, Texas State and Western Kentucky.
In 2025, he threw for 1,244 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions while going 1-6 in seven games.
“The last two years have been the most challenging of my life. Balancing new fatherhood, injuries, and adversity off the field has been tested in ways football never could,” he wrote on Instagram about the decision to enter the transfer portal. “Through it all, my love for the game never left. Football is who I am. I still love competing, leading, and playing at the highest level.
“Due to a season-ending injury sustained in 2024, I am applying for a 7th year and I’ve decided to pursue it fully. I thank God for carrying me through the storm and allowing me to put everything behind me as I move forward to 2026. I’m focused, healthy, and motivated. I look forward to finishing my career at a university that gives me an opportunity to compete, lead and finish strong. The story isn’t over.”
Here are five realistic schools where the journeyman quarterback can go next:

5 Potential Landing Spots For TJ Finley
1) UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners are a logical spot since the program is known to have leaned on veteran quarterbacks in recent seasons and has an offense appreciative of arm strength.
Currently, the program has junior Owen McCown starting for them. But surely, they could look to bring in someone like Finley, who has a lot of experience.
2) Wake Forest Demon Deacons
This might not be the best landing spot for Finley, but the program is one of the potential destinations. There are a lot of quarterbacks on the roster, with Robby Ashford, a transfer from South Carolina, starting games.
Charlotte transfer Deshawn Purdie, sophomore Billy Johnson, and the freshman duo of Elijiah Oehlke and Steele Pizzella are all competing for QB1. If not starting, Finley can surely come in to back up Ashford.
3) Marshall Thundering Herd
Here again, Finley might not be guaranteed a starting role, but Marshall is known to be the top transfer portal destination for many players in the offseason. The Thundering Herd, which plays in the Sun Belt, could use someone of Finley’s experience across different conferences and even mentor the quarterback room, led by junior Jack Clougherty.
4) Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have a crowded quarterback room on their hands, including juniors and upperclass man. But no one has the kind of experience Finley does. A veteran transfer like Finley would likely immediately compete for a starting job.
5) New Mexico Lobos
There’s a good chance to get a starting role here for TJ Finley, but for that to happen, the program must move on from their senior quarterback James Laubstein. Junior Jack Layne, Gabriel Motschenbacher, Toa Faavae and Cole Welliver could also use someone like Finley in the quarterback room.
