Steve Sarkisian Backs Quinn Ewers To Be a Success in the NFL

The NFL Scouting Combine is well underway, and the former Texas Longhorn was impressive during his passing drills. Sarkisian was very complimentary of Ewers and backed him to be a big success in the NFL.

“He creates catch-and-run opportunities for the receiver, especially by laying the ball on the boundary,” Sarkisian said of Ewers’ accuracy. “He has the arm” strength and the accuracy to put the ball in a place only the receiver can grab it.”

Ewers’ junior season at Texas was stellar. He threw for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions as he led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff. However, they fell short in the semifinals, losing 28-14 to Ohio State, the eventual national champions.

Sarkisian spoke to NFL Network and was extremely positive about Ewers’ attitude and mentor to Arch Manning. Manning has a lot hype around him. Ewers has been noted to be supportive of him, deal with the pressure he faces, and aid his understudy, with him set to become the QB1 for the Longhorns next season.

It was the second season that Ewers threw for over 3,400 yards, but a slight inconsistency in the shorter passing game and decision-making under pressure has seen him slide out of the first round. He is a very good pocket passer, and working in a clean pocket is where he is at his best. His nice touch finds receivers in their stride.

One area that slightly holds Ewers back is that he has never been a mobile quarterback. He very much prefers to sit in the pocket and piece apart defenses that way. This is why he falls into the middle rounds of many mock drafts. Quarterback mobility has become so important in the modern NFL.

Will Quinn Ewers Hear His Name Called on the Second Day of the NFL Draft?

Heading into the 2024 season, Ewers was a potential first-round pick for many people, with his incredible arm talent being a massive draw for many scouts and analysts. His ceiling is still very high, and teams later in the draft may fancy their chances and sit him for a year, but it is doubtful he will go in the first round.

CFN’s NFL Mock Draft sees him taken by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round. Ewers would be a fun pick for the Rams, and it may see them make him a starter if they believe in his talent, or he sits behind Matthew Stafford for a season before stepping into the QB1 role.

Sean McVay is one of the best head coaches in the NFL, and the Super Bowl win in 2021 with Stafford behind center shows that this fit might actually suit all parties.

An offense built around a pocket passer would work perfectly for Ewers, and with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, the Rams have a pair of dangerous running backs who can take the pressure off any quarterback.

Our mock draft would have Ewers selected as the fifth quarterback, followed by Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Jalen Milroe. As mentioned, that didn’t seem to be the case heading into the 2024 season, but we likely won’t hear Ewers’ name until Day 3.

Undoubtedly, he could go in round two or three if the right team believes in his talent and is willing to be patient with him and develop a scheme that suits his strengths. With what is considered a weaker quarterback class, we may see a team take him with a veteran so that he can learn the ropes and be the long-term solution rather than the instant starter.

Ewers is an extremely talented quarterback, and Sarkisian backs him to have a successful NFL career. The NFL Draft awaits Ewers next, and it may be a shock if he goes on Day 2, but there is plenty of belief around his arm talent and what he can bring to a franchise.
