Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has slammed the trend of firing coaches in the 2025 college football season. In a video posted by @cfbonfox on Instagram on Monday, Nov. 3, Sarkisian can be seen attending a press conference, where he was asked about his thoughts on the firings of Penn State Nittany Lions tactician James Franklin and LSU Tigers main shot-caller Brian Kelly.
Sarkisian said he cannot fathom the fact that coaches of their stature are being sacked, especially since programs will always need head coaches. Sarkisian added that Franklin and Kelly will be picked up soon enough, as the programs that dropped them have opted to temporarily tap into their personnel for interim coaches, while they search for a new head.
“ Everybody wants to fire their coach. Who you gonna hire? There’s all these jobs out there right now. Who’s everybody gonna hire? I don’t know. We’ll find out. We’re gonna, somebody’s got to be the head coach,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian has led the 2025-26 Longhorns to an overall record of 7-2 (4-1 SEC) so far. They are coming off a tight three-point triumph over the Vanderbilt Commodores, 34-31, for Week 9 on Saturday, Nov. 1, at their home stadium, the DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. Their Week 10 matchup will be against the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 15 in away territory, Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia.

Steve Sarkisian Says Coaches Should Demand Job Security
In the same press conference, Steve Sarkisian delved deeper into his thoughts regarding the recent coach firings and talked about the concept of job security for individuals in his position. Sarkisian said program management and fan bases are too harsh on coaches, who should be seeking job security.
“ The amount of, you know, ‘one week you’re a hero, the next week you’re a zero’ mentality that fan bases and people want to have, surely coaches want some security to what they signed up to go do. We work really hard and I get it. We all wanna win and we’re busting our tails to try to win. And sometimes things don’t go your way, especially in our conference. It’s tough,” Sarkisian shared. “And so, the idea that coaches, you know, don’t want some security in the jobs that they take, that doesn’t quite make sense to me,” he added.
