One of the big storylines of late 2024 was whether Quinn Ewers would transfer out of the University of Texas for a final year of college football. The quarterback had one remaining year of eligibility left, and had he decided to return, there would’ve been plenty of suitors for his services.
Alas, he didn’t. In the end, he declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round with the 231st pick. It turns out that the decision was all about not burning any bridges in Austin.
In an article published by ESPN on New Year’s Eve, the Dolphins signal-caller said:
“I felt like what I built with my teammates at Texas and the legacy that we built, I didn’t want to mess anything up there. To me, it’s not about the materialistic things of this world because it comes and goes. What’s important to me is the relationships that are built along the way. And I didn’t want to disrupt or rub anybody the wrong way, being selfish and trying to go get money from another team, because I was a lifelong Longhorn.”
“Growing up, I wanted to play there. Ended up being the quarterback there, living on my dreams. My 10-year-old self wouldn’t transfer away and go somewhere else. So, at the end of the day, that was the right decision for me,” he added.
The decision might have hurt his career, as his future as the Dolphins’ starter is still uncertain. On the other hand, had he stayed at the college level, rumors were that the strongest suitors to get his services were the Ohio State Buckeyes. Before playing for Texas, Ewers spent his redshirt freshman season at Ohio State and had a connection with the school.
A season with the reigning national champions and a genuine shot at the national title with them might have completely changed the trajectory of his career. Reportedly, there was even an $8 million NIL deal on the table.

Quinn Ewers’ Stats for the Miami Dolphins
Quinn Ewers recently made his first start, having been picked by Mike McDaniel to start over Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The game ended in a 45-21 defeat for Miami, but McDaniel decided to retain Ewers as the team’s QB1 for their next game, which was a 20-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Through both games and a brief participation in an earlier game in the season, Ewers has recorded 485 passing yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His completion percentage has been 65%.
