The Longhorns kick off their loaded SEC schedule with a date in Dallas with longtime rival Oklahoma Sooners. Playing their first-ever Red River Rivalry as members of the SEC, Ewers and the Longhorns play at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 12.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers Injury Update
As it stands now, just a few hours before kickoff, it was confirmed that Ewers would indeed be behind center for the Longhorns. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian named Ewers the starting quarterback on Thursday, officially clearing him for play for the first time since Week 3.
Back against UTSA in Week 3, Ewers suffered a non-contact injury from within the pocket. Later described as an oblique strain, Ewers pulled out of the game himself after launching a deep pass and walking gingerly off to the sidelines holding his side.
He hadn’t played since Week 3 and second-year QB Arch Manning had filled in for Ewers with great success.

Once upon a time, Ewers was the most heralded recruit coming out of high school. According to Ewers’ 247 recruiting profile, he was the No. 1 ranked player across the country, landing as the No. 1 player in Texas and the No. 1 quarterback in the process.
He originally committed and played his first season at Ohio State, before transferring back to his home state following the 2021 season.

Ewers was a consensus five-star recruit and scored a perfect 1.000 on the 247Sports Composite rating system. Coming from Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, Ewers’ potential has been seen as sky-high since he won MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year in 2019.
Who Does Ewers’ Play Compare To?
At the college football level, Ewers play style reminds fans closely of Baker Mayfield, though he has some Matthew Stafford to his game. Ewers will buy time and flash creation capacity in the pocket, like Mayfield, but given time to stand in the pocket, he’ll rifle passes into tight windows just like Stafford.
It should be noted that both of those comparisons are former No. 1 overall picks, and that’s just the nature of the game for Ewers, who has often been seen as a high-end draft prospect all the same.
Why Did Quinn Ewers Transfer to Texas?
Following the 2021 season in Columbus, Ewers entered the transfer portal. He left a crowded Ohio State QB room that included C.J. Stroud and Kyle McCord. It should also be noted that Ewers famously reclassifed himself in high school, becoming a member of the 2021 class, as opposed to the 2022 class, and played his freshman season in Columbus when he should’ve been a high school senior.

Ewers had also previously been committed to Texas and former head coach Tom Herman in high school, flipping his commitment to the Buckeyes in late 2020. In the end, Ewers himself cited the reason for his transfer as being homesick and how he grew up watching and rooting for the Longhorns as his reason for transferring to Texas.

Previously, Ewers routinely found himself in the back half of the Round 1 discussion, and his talents should absolutely keep him there, if not higher, as the season progresses.
