The Texas Longhorns had their ups and downs last season, but the team is already in the mix to be one of the SEC’s top programs as they enter their second year in the conference. However, not everyone is convinced of their capability.
Billy Liucci, a Texas A&M insider, sparked intense online discussions by questioning how Texas reached the College Football Playoff Semifinal without achieving a “true signature win.” Meanwhile, Texas insider Anwar Richardson fired back by sharing his belief that UT did more than enough to silence critics by beating multiple top-tier teams.

Football Insiders Say 2024 Texas Didn’t Have a Signature Win
The “no signature win” debate started when Billy Liucci, a well-known Texas A&M analyst, questioned how Texas made the College Football Playoff without a standout victory. He defended their playoff loss to Ohio State but challenged whether Texas truly had a defining win that set them apart.

When asked about Texas having a favorable schedule, @billyliucci DEFENDED the Longhorns! 👀
“It’s proof the conferences are too big, and they need to figure out scheduling.
“Just make it 9 (SEC) games… stop being bitches.”

Liucci asked, “How do you make the [College Football Playoff] Final Four, and you don’t have a signature win? It’s weird, right? And I give them credit because a couple of teams, you know… Penn State’s signature win to get there? They beat Boise [State], right? Boise and SMU, SMU at home.”
He also pointed to issues with conference scheduling, saying bigger leagues make it harder for teams to prove themselves. The outspoken analyst has a proposal that could ease the challenge.

Meanwhile, Anwar Richardson, a respected Texas analyst, completely disagrees with the idea that Texas lacks a signature win. He reminded people that Texas beat Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas A&M, and Clemson, arguing that these wins should be enough to prove they belong.
I’m old enough to remember when college football observers questioned whether Texas could handle SEC competition. Now, Texas does not have a “signature win.” Beating Michigan, OU, Florida, Texas A&M, and Clemson without a “signature” win says more about them than Texas. https://t.co/2tbF4o6uMX

Now, the debate has visibly shifted to what actually counts as a signature win. Experts have different opinions, but the Longhorns will have plenty of opportunities to silence doubters.
In 2025, the Longhorns have out-of-conference games scheduled against national champion Ohio State, San Jose State, and UTEP. In the SEC, they’ll face powerhouse programs, such as Florida, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Texas A&M.
