Texas Legend Kevin Durant Trolls John Mateer’s Sooners as Arch Manning, Ryan Wingo, and More Rack Up Red River Rivalry Win

NBA superstar and former Texas Longhorns men’s basketball star Kevin Durant had jokes after his alma mater’s football program pulled off a huge win. On Saturday, Oct. 11, coach Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns defeated their long-time conference rivals in coach Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners for their Week 6 matchup of the 2025 NFL season by 17 points, 23-6.

This prompted Durant to troll the Sooners as he posted a seven-word reaction on his X/Twitter account. Durant is known for his stellar one-and-done year with the Longhorns in the 2006-07 season, where he won the John R. Wooden Award, the Naismith College Player of the Year Award, and several other accolades that unanimously declared him the best player in college hoops that year.

“Goodbye Sooners. Ayo what is a sooner?” Durant wrote.

Much to the delight of Durant and the rest of the Longhorns faithful, Texas used an awe-inspiring second-half performance to pull away from John Mateer’s Oklahoma. The Sooners had a tight three-point lead (6-3) at halftime, but the combined efforts of Ryan Wingo, starting quarterback Arch Manning, and wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. gave the Longhorns a 20-0 run throughout the third and fourth quarters to win the hotly contested affair at home.

This gives coach Sarkisian’s Longhorns an overall record of 4-2 (1-1 SEC), as the 2025 campaign reaches its midway point. Texas was coming into the game after having lost its first conference matchup of the year against the Florida Gators, 29-21. Following the triumph over the Sooners, the Longhorns will set their sights on the Kentucky Wildcats for Week 7 on Friday, Oct. 17, in away territory at Kroger Field.

Durant will be uncorking his 18th season in the NBA in the upcoming 2025-26 campaign with coach Ime Udoka’s Houston Rockets after he was traded this July. Durant spent the 2024-25 season with coach Mike Budenholzer’s Phoenix Suns, where they finished with an overall record of 36-46 and missed the 2025 Play-Ins, therefore not qualifying for this year’s Playoffs.
