Wells, a 6’5″, 300-pound defensive four-star recruit, chose Texas over a lengthy list of schools that vied for his services, which included Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Tennessee, and Florida.
A native of Petal, Mississippi, Wells was ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the state and the 26th-best defensive lineman in the country, according to the 247 Sports Composite rankings.
In an interview with On3, Wells spoke about the reasoning behind his decision.
“I’ll get developed here,” Wells said. “I know they will take real good care of me, and I’ll have a chance to make it to the next level – the NFL. That’s where I want to be.”
Wells canceled a scheduled visit with Mississippi State on June 20, which was reported after news of his commitment broke.
In another interview with Orangebloods.com, Wells spoke highly of the school and its embrace of him.
“Texas, I love it here,” Wells said of his visit, where freshman defensive tackle Josiah Sharma hosted him. “It’s big in Texas, I’m not going to lie. I love the players, the coaches, the culture. The culture is going to be good.”

Wells’ decision also comes after a key recruitment visit over the weekend, which also saw defensive lineman Dylan Berymon, wide receiver Kohen Brown, and kicker Jake Collett make the Longhorns their school of choice afterward.
Currently ranked No. 1 according to ESPN, the Longhorns are stacking up to make sure they remain dominant for years to come. Wells’ addition makes him the first defensive lineman Sarkisian has successfully recruited while at Texas.
