Coco Gauff showcased her mental tenacity on court after bouncing back from her singles loss against Maneiro to win the crucial mixed doubles tie, which sent the United States to the quarterfinals of the United Cup in Perth, Australia.
Before her game on Monday, Gauff provided clarification on her earlier statements, in which she had expressed her frustration with American fans for not attending international tournaments to support her.
In her frustrated comments from earlier, Gauff said, “I feel like we’re definitely in the tennis department, the worst when it comes to that. I’ve always said I wish our country in other places would show up throughout the world the way we see maybe smaller countries support.”
She added, “But I also think it’s because our country is good in so many sports, so it’s just hard. I do think there are more Americans that come out in Melbourne than necessarily here, but I would like to see some more Americans if you make it to Sydney — more than there were last year.”
After drawing fans’ ire over her comments, Gauff quickly clarified her statements, and now former World No. 1 Serena Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, has also jumped in to defend the two-time Grand Slam champion.
In her social media post, Stubbs wrote, “@CocoGauff is literally 1 of the classiest people our sport has to offer in so many ways. She works hard, she’s incredibly respectful to everyone around her, including her opponents, the media & fans, etc. What she said wasn’t wrong, just a truthful comment from a truthful person.”
What Were Coco Gauff’s Clarifying Statements?
Issuing a clarification before her singles clash on Monday, Gauff said, “I‘m going to clarify because people are dragging this out of context. I‘m not expecting people to travel to tournaments to watch us play… I was just speaking from my perspective.”
She added, “Trust me I understand the financial aspect of things and know tennis is not accessible for everyone, it was more of a comment for those who are already attending and how I wish they were as passionate as those from other countries more specifically team events… Nevertheless I am grateful for any support no matter how big or small it is.”
Gauff will be seen in action next in the quarterfinals clash of the United Cup before travelling to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
