Serena Williams’ Childhood Coach Gives No-Panic Verdict on Coco Gauff Despite 14 Double Faults in United Cup Shocker

Two-time Coco Gauff struggled with her serve for most of her 2025 campaign. It’s 2026, but it appears her struggles with serve have followed. Amid the unsettling situation, Serena Williams’ childhood coach gives a no-panic verdict.

In her United Cup singles match against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Gauff committed 14 double faults. She won just 6 of 32 second-serve points, and her first-serve percentage was around 60%. Her struggles led to an upset as the World No. 4 lost the match 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-0.

Despite the loss and her evident struggles with serve, Williams’ former coach Rick Macci gave a settling verdict, analyzing Gauff’s serves closely.

“Coco and her serve is better. Technically it is better. What happened at the United Cup was all mental. She is on track. But I would 100% go to a platform stance and rewire everything to have even less movement to not wobble under pressure,” he wrote on X.

Macci further explained the corrections he has seen in Gauff’s serve since last season.

“Coco and the serve is more stable and connected. This is a career changer. I see 3 major biomechanical adaptations that have been identified and corrected to hold up under pressure and with quality. Fans could be going Loco for Coco,” he wrote on X.

Coco Gauff Helps USA Win Over Spain In United Cup

Despite losing the singles fixture, Coco Gauff made a comeback in the mixed doubles match.

After starting on a losing note, Team USA’s Taylor Fritz kept the tie alive by winning his match against world number 38 Jaume Munar, 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 7-6 (8/6). Now, it was Gauff’s time to make up for her loss in the singles.

She paired with Christian Harrison to win against Yvonne Cavallé-Reimers and Íñigo Cervantes 7-6 (7/5) 6-0 and secure a United Cup quarterfinal berth.

“I was happy to get back out there on court and get a point for my team today,” Gauff said. “Obviously [my singles loss] wasn’t a great match for me. Once it was over, I just sat in the bathroom for a little bit. I had a lot of confidence in Taylor, so I was just trying to make sure that I was ready for the mixed. That’s the beauty of this event, that you have other people who can pick you up on your off days.”

Team USA is a strong contender to win the United Cup, but Coco Gauff needs to be at her absolute best to make that happen.
