Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open 2026 Chances Take Big Hit After Worrying Announcement

Novak Djokovic has announced his withdrawal from the Adelaide International, an ATP 250 event, ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year in the Australian swing. The Serb made the announcement via an Instagram story on Monday, Jan. 5.

“To all my fans in Adelaide, unfortunately, I’m not quite physically ready to compete in the Adelaide International next week. It’s personally very disappointing to me as I have such great memories of winning the title there two years ago,” the 38-year-old wrote.

“I was really excited about returning as it truly felt like playing at home. My focus is now on my preparation for the Australian Open, and I look forward to arriving in Melbourne soon and seeing all the tennis fans in Australia,” he added.

With the latest announcement from the World No. 4, many have begun to raise doubts over his fitness and a potential withdrawal from the Australian Open as well. However, the Serb remains optimistic about arriving in Melbourne soon before the start of the Australian Open. Djokovic has won the tournament a record 10 times.

Novak Djokovic Announces Leaving the PTPA

On Sunday, Djokovic took to X to announce his decision to step away from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which he co-founded alongside Vasek Pospisil in 2021.

In his social media post on X, the Serb wrote:

“After careful consideration, I have decided to step away completely from the Professional Tennis Players Association. This decision comes after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented.”

“I am proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, giving players a stronger, independent voice – but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organization. I will continue to focus on my tennis, my family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect my principles and integrity. I wish the players and those involved the best as they move forward, but for me, this chapter is now closed,” he added.

It remains to be seen how recent events shape Djokovic’s decision to continue professional tennis.
