Naomi Osaka’s ex-boyfriend and American rapper, Cordae, has penned a heartfelt message regarding their daughter, Shai. The couple, who started dating in 2019, welcomed Shai in July 2023 and announced the end of their relationship in January 2025.
However, Osaka and Cordae have been on good terms and are co-parenting their two-year-old. On Thursday, January 8, Cordae wrote an endearing message about Shai on his Instagram stories.
“My greatest flex is that my daughter wakes me up every morning with a big ole smile on her face,” he wrote.
Due to pregnancy, Osaka was away from the court for around 15 months. She made her comeback ahead of the 2024 Australian Open and has since been trying to find her groove.
However, the four-time Grand Slam champion also has her motherly duties to perform now. Ahead of the ongoing United Cup, Naomi Osaka reflected on looking after Shai as well as focusing on tennis.
“I would say it’s definitely really tough. This off-season was quite difficult for me, as well, just because you try to be there for her all the time, and obviously, there are moments where you have to practice or you have to do something. It is really difficult,” Osaka told The Tennis Gazette.
“I hope that I’m managing it or I’m juggling it well. I also hope there’s going to come a time that she understands why I did the things that I did,” she added.
Osaka won one of her two singles matches at the United Cup, while Team Japan lost both its ties.
When Naomi Osaka Announced the End of Her Relationship With Cordae
Last January, Naomi Osaka revealed that she and Cordae ended their relationship, though there was no animosity between the two. She wrote on her Instagram story:
“Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship. No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and an awesome dad. Honestly really glad our paths because my daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”
In another interview, the Japanese commented on co-parenting with Cordae.
“I don’t know if it’s because he’s just an easygoing guy, but I think we just respect each other’s opinions. And if we disagree on something, we talk it out. At the end of the day, we both want what’s best for Shai,” she said (via People).
Naomi Osaka is gearing up for the Australian Open, hoping to add a third title to her cabinet. She emerged victorious in 2019 and 2021.
