Coco Gauff’s Humiliating Bagel Against World No. 42 in Shock United Cup Loss Leaves Fans Baffled

Coco Gauff suffered a shocking defeat against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the Group A clash between Team USA and Spain at the United Cup on Monday, Jan. 5. Maneiro played phenomenal tennis to beat the American 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-0.

Gauff attempted a brief comeback in the second set after falling 4-1 down to win the set in a tie-breaker. Still, World No. 42 Maneiro turned on her afterburners in the final set to shut out the World No. 4 in ruthless fashion, thereby shocking herself and the fans inside the arena.

The loss leaves the defending champions under pressure. Taylor Fritz had an injury scare in the opening United Cup matchup, where he lost to Sebastian Baez of Argentina.
While it remains to be seen what happens in Fritz vs. Jaume Munar’s singles game, if the Spaniard receives a walkover, Team USA would lose the contest irrespective of the mixed doubles results later in the day.
Fans were quick to take note of Gauff’s shocking defeat in Perth, Australia, on Monday and shared their reactions on social media.
“Coco probably should’ve been practicing instead of making anti-American tweets,” one fan commented.
“Guys i was out with my friends literally what the f*ck is happening with coco,” another fan commented.
“Breadsticked by bouzass omg wake up cori,” yet another fan commented.
Fans didn’t stop there and kept lashing out at Gauff’s performance against the Spaniard, which raised many questions regarding her playing style in the build-up to the first Grand Slam of the year.
“Wow what are we watching,” commented one fan.
“Coco sister this is not how we are gonna defeat the basher pandemic,” commented another fan.
“Yeah there’s no defending that performance in that set she needs to go back to the basics a bit and just start a point,” yet another fan commented.

Coco Gauff is Not the Highest-Ranked American in Women’s Tennis Anymore

With the disappointing loss against Maneiro, Gauff took a tumble in the live WTA rankings, as Amanda Anisimova replaced her at No. 3. Anisimova has now become the highest-ranked American in women’s tennis. Gauff is now ranked World No. 4 with 6,273 points, above Elena Rybakina.

Gauff will hope to rebound from her United Cup loss, train hard, and aim to produce a dominant performance at the Australian Open, which starts on Jan. 18.
