Carlos Alcaraz’s father, Carlos Alcaraz Sr., is the latest to chime in on his son’s split with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. Ferrero took Alcaraz under his wing at the age of 15 and oversaw six Grand Slams and 24 ATP Tour singles titles.
During an interview with Marca, Ferrero said he was “hurt” by how the relationship ended and that there was a lack of communication over some of the terms of his contract.
Alcaraz’s father responded to Ferrero’s comments, telling Agencia EFE that “everyone is free to express an opinion based on what they know.” Alcaraz Sr. did not expand on his comments or provide any further details about the split.
In the meantime, Alcaraz is busy preparing for the 2026 season under Samuel Lopez. His agent Albert Molina recently shared an update that the World No. 1 has cleared all medical checks and has hit the court for practice.
Carlos Alcaraz Knew About Disagreements With Juan Carlos Ferrero
While Juan Carlos Ferrero was in the middle of negotiations over a new contract with Carlos Alcaraz’s camp, he said he took the liberty of asking the player himself whether he was aware of the disagreements between the two parties.
“I spoke with him beforehand to ask if he was aware of everything, and he said yes,” Ferrero said. “From then on, I spoke with the people I needed to speak with. I left him out of it because I understood he was aware of everything. If we couldn’t reach an agreement, well, his people would look out for him, and I’d look out for mine. It’s normal that he’s on his side, of course.”
Ferrero also admitted that the financial aspect played no part in the split.
“The financial aspect has been brought up,” Ferrero added. “And I’ve shown from a very young age that it wasn’t the most important thing for me. There’s been talk that I asked for more, and it’s true that they’ve always been very generous with a very high percentage for those early years when I was so involved with it. And I appreciate that. In the end, I’ve tried to make it clear that the financial issue wasn’t one of the problems, nor was it the reason I was in this project.”
In the end, Ferrero also said that if there is an opportunity in the future to work with Alcaraz once again, he will consider it.
