Juan Carlos Ferrero was more than just a head coach to Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard would agree that Ferrero played the role of mentor and second father figure after he began learning under him at the age of 15. Over seven years and six Grand Slam wins later, the partnership came to an end a couple of weeks ago.
Alcaraz has elevated Samuel Lopez as his new head coach, and he has already begun training for the 2026 season. It will be his first time down under without Ferrero by his side. The entire tennis world will be watching to see how the World No. 1 performs without Ferrero.
According to the former US Open runner-up Greg Rusedski, the divorce with Ferrero might be disastrous for Alcaraz’s career.
“Will this make him stronger? Will it give him more courage? I’m still undecided, but I think the loss of Juan Carlos Ferrero is enormous,” Rusedski said on his podcast. “He wasn’t just an excellent coach; he was also sometimes like a second father to him. This causes emotional turmoil, because when you have a slight doubt or you’re not playing well, do you have that strong person in your box to tell you what to do? We’ll soon find out if the separation between the two is as detrimental as we think.”
What Happened to Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Union
After Carlos Alcaraz publicly announced splitting with Juan Carlos Ferrero, the head coach has given several interviews where he has shared the details on what went wrong between the two parties.
Ferrero said he found the new terms of the contract unacceptable and while he was willing to talk them over, Alcaraz’s camp didn’t even come to the negotiation table. Ferrero reportedly had conditions about travel commitments and tournament attendance. He just wanted to know if Alcaraz knew what was happening, and once the Spaniard acknowledged being aware of the ongoing situation, he never bothered the World No. 1 again.
Ferrero has also expressed that the split was emotionally difficult for him. He wished he could have remained the head coach, but they took different paths in the end.
