Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik have arrived in South Korea for an exhibition match. The showcase will be the only time that they will spend on court before the Australian Open.
Understandably, there was plenty of excitement ahead of the showdown between the World No. 1 and 2. During the media day, the pair even addressed questions about the possibility of pairing up for doubles, piquing fans’ widespread curiosity.
On being asked about the roles that two would take if the plan were to come to fruition, Alcaraz joked that there was no question about who would pick the forehand and the backhand sides.
On a more serious note, the Spaniard said while he and Sinner have never discussed pairing up, it would be “fun” idea.
“I think there’s no doubt on who’s playing backhand and who forehand,” Carlos Alcaraz said. “I’m not sure if we ever talked about it, if we did it was once or twice, we thought about it, but as we are focused on singles and playing so many matches it’s difficult to manage that.”
“But leaving Seoul, we may leave as doubles partner once, at least once, it would be fun! I will play FH and he plays BH, my partner will agree,” he added.
Alcaraz and Sinner last played each other at the ATP Finals, where the Italian scored a tight two-set win to lift the trophy.
“It’s going to be a surprise” – Jannik Sinner on possibility of pairing up with Carlos Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner echoed the sentiment voiced by Carlos Alcaraz, saying it would be difficult logistically for them to play doubles together. He pointed out the busy schedule, saying it would not allow for proper recovery.
The Italian, however, did not completely rule out the possibility. He said the pairing could work for a tournament or two but refused to divulge any details, saying it would be a “surprise”.
“Yeah, I agree for sure,” Jannik Sinner said. “You know, we never talked about this but it would be fun to share the court in different ways, on the same side.”
“Of course because of singles it would be difficult, because if we go deep we wouldn’t have the right recovery, but-you know, for one tournament it would be great to do it. We’re going to talk about it… maybe this year at a certain time, when we feel like it, or next year. Why not! It’s going to be a surprise,” he added.
Alcaraz and Sinner will clash in the Hyundai Card “Super Match” exhibition, scheduled to be played at the Inspire Arena in Incheon, South Korea, on Saturday.
