Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have dominated the tennis for the past two years, sharing every Grand Slam. However, according to a former tennis star, wins are coming easy for them.
Former ATP star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recently claimed that modern-day tennis doesn’t have the same level of competition as in the past decade. In the past, the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had to go through some top-notch competition to win a Grand Slam. However, in modern-day tennis, the level of competition is not the same.
“What I would have liked to see is Alcaraz winning Roland Garros, but by beating Del Potro, Murray, Djokovic, in the semi-final, and in the final, Nadal. Because today Sinner and Alcaraz dominate from head to toe. There are two for now,” Tsonga said.
Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, hit back at Tsonga, suggesting that the former French tennis player was wrong about the competitiveness of top players other than Alcaraz and Sinner.
“I don’t agree with what Joe said,” Mouratoglou said. “I don’t believe at all that those guys we’re talking about, Draper, Ruud, De Minaur, Fritz, Shelton, Auger-Aliassime, are not very good or not dangerous. They’re huge players. I’m sorry, Joe, but I’m not sure you would have beaten them on a regular basis.
“He is referring to Wawrinka and Del Potro, who are unbelievable players for sure. But you see how unbelievable they were throughout the course of their careers. At 29 years old, Stan Wawrinka was a good player, nothing more. At 31, he was a triple Grand Slam winner. Of course, the guys who have achieved greatness throughout their whole careers have more titles and potentially a few Grand Slams when others don’t.”
Mouratoglou further added that Alcaraz and Sinner also had to beat 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic before going on a roll. As such, to say Sinner and Alcaraz are only accomplishing big things because of the level of play would be unjust.
“Alcaraz and Sinner beat Djokovic, who had 23 Grand Slams, to start winning Grand Slams themselves,” Mouratoglou added. “When Novak won three out of four Grand Slams, making the final of the fourth one, he lost to Alcaraz in that fourth one. And I don’t believe that saying those guys are winning that much because of the level of the other top-10 players gives them the credit they deserve 100%. The level is unbelievable, unbelievable.”
Chris Eubanks 100% Agrees With Patrick Mouratoglou’s Supporting Claim For Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Under the comments section of the Instagram video where Patrick Mouratoglou attests confidence in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner while believing intense competition within the top-ranked players, former tennis player Chris Eubanks sided with Serena Williams’ former coach. He commented:
“100% agree with you here. We can’t act like the level has ONLY gotten better at the top and the guys just below that level have somehow gotten worse???? The level is higher all throughout the tour.”

Since Tsonga played in the career of the Big Three, he watched and competed with other tennis stars, leading him to believe they were very tough. However, Mouratgolou’s argument has its own merit, making the entire discussion debatable as everyone has their own way of looking at things.
