TC Caffey Leaves Ohio State And Signs With Youngstown State, Adding Power And Big Ten Pedigree To Penguins’ Backfield

Typically, players enter the transfer portal to join a better team than the one they previously played for. Occasionally, they seek a different culture or simply want a fresh start, which also drives them to transfer. In short, the goal is always to find something better.

However, TC Caffey’s commitment seems to have gone in the opposite direction. He transferred from Ohio State to Youngstown State, a program that competes at the FCS level.

From Buckeye to Underdog: Ohio State RB’s Surprise Transfer Sparks Buzz in FCS Circles

Ohio State competes at the FBS level in the Big Ten, one of the most competitive conferences in college football. Youngstown State, on the other hand, competes at the FCS level, which is a tier below FBS. While the Penguins have a strong football tradition and four FCS national championships, it doesn’t have the same resources or national prominence as Ohio State.

So, what would happen if a player from Ohio State transferred to Youngstown State? It will surprise many for sure. Even though the Penguins are one of the top teams at the FCS level, they’re no match for the powerhouse Buckeyes.

Because of this reason, Caffey’s transfer to Youngstown State has turned heads. However, he had no choice, as his time with the Buckeyes effectively ended two years ago due to injuries.

The 5’10” RB originally joined Ohio State as a preferred walk-on in 2022, meaning the Buckeyes invited him to the team but did not offer him a scholarship right away. However, he quickly made an impact, including a memorable 49-yard touchdown run against Toledo, proving his value on the field.

But his time in Columbus was cut short by back-to-back injuries. He tore his ACL in 2023 and suffered another season-ending knee injury in 2024. These setbacks kept him off the field for two full seasons.

With two years of eligibility left, Caffey is ready for a fresh start. Although it’s an unexpected move for him, the Penguins are thrilled to add him to their roster before the new season begins. His style and Big Ten experience will be an asset to the team, and he will likely have a proper role to shine, something he missed at Ohio State.
