The Michigan sign-stealing scandal from 2023 is expected to come to its conclusion on Friday. The NCAA is scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday afternoon to announce the findings from its investigation, along with punishments given out to Michigan Football and its staff.
Before the press conference, insider Pete Thamel tweeted out the punishments that are expected to be handed out to Michigan. The Wolverines are expected to face a fine of more than $20 million. Additionally, head coach Sherrone Moore, who was the offensive coordinator at the time of the scandal, is expected to be given an additional game suspension, which is expected to take place in 2026. The school already imposed a two-game ban for Moore this coming season, which will be served in Weeks 3 and 4.

While these punishments are severe, they did not satisfy all college football fans. Many reacted in the comments, calling for stricter measures against Michigan.
“Strip them of the title,” one fan wrote.
“Copped out the postseason ban with a fine,” one fan commented.
“A suspension in 2026 is wild,” one fan added.
Fans continued to react in the comments.
“A slap on the wrist to the golden boys, what else is new?” one fan wrote.
“This “punishment” makes no sense. If they cheated, this is a slap on the wrist and will not dissuade others from doing the same. If they didn’t cheat, why the $20MM fine?” one fan commented.
“That fine is peanuts to them. If that’s all there is, they got off pretty well,” one fan added.

Michigan’s Sherrone Moore Is Set To Face Further Punishment for His Involvement in the 2023 Sign-Stealing Scandal
The most notable aspect of the reported sanctions against the Michigan Wolverines is the increased suspension for head coach Sherrone Moore. While Moore was not the primary person running the operation, he deleted a thread of 52 text messages with Michigan staffer Connor Stalions, who oversaw the scandal.
Michigan administered a self-imposed suspension for Moore this season, which is to last two games, and will be served in Weeks 3 and 4. However, based on Thamel’s report, it does not appear that it satisfied the NCAA. He will reportedly be suspended for an additional game in 2026. It is not clear at this time why the extra game is not being served in the 2025 season.
