While the Ole Miss fans could see their coach leave at the end of the season, Texas appears to be on the other side of the fence. Steve Sarkisian was very vocal in a recent SEC Coaches Teleconference. In an X post by Inside Texas, Sarkisian commented on his potential departure from the University of Texas.
Sarkisian made it clear that he isn’t going anywhere. He also noted that normally, he doesn’t comment on coaching rumors.
“NEVER DO I DO THIS BECAUSE I NEVER WANT TO BE A DISTRACTION…THIS IS IMPORTANT THAT I DO THIS BECAUSE IT’S IMPORTANT FOR OUR TEAM,” he said.
STEVE SARKISIAN OPENS THE SEC COACHES TELECONFERENCE WITH COMMENTS ON HIS STATUS AT TEXAS: “I’D LIKE TO COMMENT SOMETHING BEFORE I GET INTO OUR TEAM THAT HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME NOW OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS. THAT IS PEOPLE REPORTING THAT ARE INSINUATING THAT THERE’S A POSSIBILITY I…

He would go on to finish by citing his love of Texas and the city of Austin. The biggest takeaway from the monologue was that he isn’t going anywhere. His name can be crossed off the long list of coaching changes that are yet to come.

Texas Longhorns’ Path To The Playoff
It doesn’t look great for Texas. They have three losses and are ranked 17th, according to the committee. If Sarkisian wants his team in the playoffs, they have work to do.
So what’s the most important factor for Texas? Win. No more losses for the rest of the year, including the season closer against Texas A&M. If they can do that, they would at least be in the picture.
The other side of the puzzle is the fringe conferences. The Big 12 and the ACC have three teams that are on the bubble. Utah, Miami, and BYU could be an issue for the Longhorns. Each of them will likely need to drop a game for Texas to get ahead of them. For now, the Longhorns can only focus on winning.
Texas winning out could make an argument against the majority of the two-loss teams that are in contention. At that point, the Horns would have wins against two other playoff teams in Oklahoma and Texas A&M. No other team in contention can say that. Two of their losses are against Top 5 playoff teams – Ohio State and Georgia.
Bottom Line
The Longhorns’ College Football Playoff hopes might be in question, but their head coach for 2026 is not. Sarkisian will likely stay in Austin despite the numerous job opportunities that have opened up throughout the season. Sarkisian had made it known that he wants to win a championship for Texas, but with low playoff chances, the wait will likely continue for at least one more year.
