“Didn’t Even Make a Bowl Game”: Stephen A. Smith Drops Unfiltered Take On Brian Kelly’s LSU Firing

The LSU fans wanted their former head coach, Brian Kelly, gone, but they didn’t think the program would be so quick to take action because of his buyout worth over $50 million.

However, to everyone’s surprise, LSU made an abrupt decision after the Tigers lost to Texas A&M in Week 9 during a 25-49 game and announced that they are firing their head coach, Kelly.

During Tuesday’s edition of “First Take,” Mad Dog, aka Chris Russo, opened up about his frustration over “boosters” controlling college football, while discussing Kelly’s firing at LSU.

Dubbing Russo’s take “nonsense,” analyst Stephen A. Smith shared his opinion on the situation.

“I’m not going with you for that,” Smith said (2:13). “And I’m going to tell you why. Because there’s credibility to the decisions that was making. Reality check. Brian Kelly haven’t won a title in his fourth year. Les Miles did it. Nick Saban did it. This man didn’t even make a bowl game. You left you left Notre Dame to go to LSU because of NIL money, money for the transfer portal and all of this other stuff. You can’t even take LSU to a playoff game.”

“I like Brian Kelly. I know he could coach, but he was never he never ingratiated himself with that SEC community at LSU. They made the right call,” he added.

Mike Elko Makes Thoughts Clear on Brian Kelly’s LSU Firing

While Mike Elko did not directly impact Kelly’s firing, his outcoaching of the LSU head coach on Saturday may have led the program to decide on Kelly’s future.

During his appearance on the show called “Bussin with the Boys,” Elko was asked about his thoughts on the situation.

The Aggies’ head coach expressed his respect for the ex-LSU head coach and said Kelly was the one who gave him his first opportunity to get on the big stage at Notre Dame when Elko was serving as a defensive coordinator at Wake Forest.

Elko added that he has a ton of respect for Kelly and revealed that they have a great professional relationship, along with a lot of mutual respect for each other.

Talking about the firing, Elko said it’s never something anybody wants to see for someone, and certainly not for a guy who helped you in your career at some point.
