Nico Iamaleava Ranks First Among Spring Portal Players To Watch

The spring transfer portal this year has produced some eye-catching situations, prompting players to seek out larger roles (and in some cases, better NIL money) elsewhere. The latest list has one certainty at the top,  former University of Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava. But others near the top are just as compelling, and we’ll take a look at them in this article before the dust settles on April 25 with the portal ending.

    Nico Iamaleava (QB)

The potential is through the roof for the 20-year-old signal caller. His departure from the University of Tennessee is mired in some controversy, but he did lead the Volunteers into the College Football Playoffs as a redshirt freshman. Depending on where he goes next, the upside could quiet the critics. UCLA is still a favorite for the Long Beach, California native.

    Beau Atkinson (EDGE)

Atkinson’s entry into the portal is sure to imbue the defense of the next school he lands at with speed and diligent focus. During his time at the University of North Carolina, he recorded 7 1/2 sacks, mainly in situational duty on the line. His role is expected to grow, and he’s got two more years of eligibility.

    Joe Cotton (OT)

The all-pro lineman spent his first two years with the University of South Dakota, making the All-Missouri Valley Conference team for both. The 6-foot-7, 315-pound offensive tackle’s entry into the portal, where schools need someone with that combo of size and skill, is sure to keep his name buzzing.

    Trebor Pena (WR)

Syracuse’s top receiver entered the portal under some turbulence over his purported NIL requests. The sixth-year senior is still in high demand, especially after a season where he made his name on sizable gains on returns as well as being a go-to on third downs. The University of Miami is atop the rumored landing spots for him.

    Elo Modozie (EDGE)

The former Army defensive player’s entry into the portal caught many by surprise, being
An all-conference player for the Black Knights as a sophomore, who nabbed 6 1/2 sacks
    and 34 tackles last season.
