Colorado Buffaloes quarterback signee Julian Lewis has high expectations for his career in Boulder, but there hasn’t been a changing of the guard quite yet. Lewis, who has participated in Alamo Bowl practices as the scout team quarterback, is learning behind future first-rounder Shedeur Sanders.
And according to Lewis, Sanders is a superstar. The rising freshman had high praise for the guy he’s set to replace, making a bold claim about his future draft position.
Colorado Signee Julian Lewis Awestruck By Shedeur Sanders
Julian Lewis is a five-star quarterback recruit and the top quarterback in our 2025 recruiting rankings.
But Lewis still has to wait patiently before suiting up for the Buffaloes. On Saturday, it’s the Sanders show for the last time in Boulder, Colorado.
Sanders is one of the top 2025 NFL Draft prospects, and he’s likely to be one of the first players off the board, along with teammate Travis Hunter.
In a video posted by Deion Sanders Jr., Lewis candidly explained what it’s like to practice with Sanders and Hunter.
“I’m just spectating future New York Giants quarterback,” Lewis said in the now-viral locker room video. “I’m so inspired. I get to watch [Sander] and Travis Hunter every day.”

Sanders needs 268 passing yards in the Alamo Bowl against the BYU Cougars to reach 4,000 for the season. He’s also thrown 35 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.
Sanders is the second-ranked quarterback in our 2025 NFL Draft rankings, but Lewis would put him a bit higher on the list.
The New York Giants are the team currently holding the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, implying that Lewis believes Sanders will be the first overall pick.
He’ll certainly have a shot to go first, though Hunter could also have a chance.
Both players have announced that they’ll play in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night, partially due to one of the largest insurance policies in the history of college football.
The Buffaloes will take on the BYU Cougars in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
