CFB Analyst Questions South Carolina’s Portal Strategy at WR and Its Impact on QB LaNorris Sellers’ 2025 Breakout Potential

Analyst Josh Pate warns that South Carolina’s failure to add WRs in the portal could stunt LaNorris Sellers' growth heading into 2025 season.

South Carolina football fans are looking forward to a big season from quarterback LaNorris Sellers in 2025. But some people are worried he might not have enough help around him.

While the Gamecocks have made some important roster changes, their moves in the transfer portal for wide receivers have raised questions. However, not only the football community but also CFB analyst Josh Pate shared a similar concern in his recent discussion.

How South Carolina’s Portal Miss at WR Might Impact LaNorris Sellers’ Growth This Season

South Carolina’s approach to recruiting wide receivers through the transfer portal has raised concerns, and it’s a topic that has been discussed a lot this offseason, especially with Sellers still on their side.

Sellers played in 11 games in 2024, starting 7 of them. He threw for over 2,400 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 450 yards and five touchdowns. His dual-threat skills gave the Gamecocks a big boost. As the season went on, their offense looked better and better.

But football is a team sport—and Sellers can’t do everything alone. Their wide receiver position has remained a major concern since last year. The program didn’t add much help at that spot through the transfer portal, and it’s starting to worry both fans and football experts.

CFB analyst Josh Pate recently spoke about this issue. He said, “South Carolina really didn’t add anything at wide receiver in the portal, and I very much expected them to because it’s an area of big need for them. I just wonder, with the guys they have in-house, can they help Sellers enough?”

This season, we expect Sellers to lead South Carolina football in a big way. Though he may be the face of the team, he still needs playmakers around him. In 2024, no wide receiver on the team had more than 400 receiving yards. That’s a stat that has to change if the Gamecocks want to compete at a higher level.

To make things tougher, the team also lost four offensive linemen to the NFL draft. That leaves even more questions about their offense heading into the new season. However, Pate did offer a little hope.

“Again, it’s college football, so there are always unknown commodities in spring, summer, and fall that end up coming on the scene big time and even surprising the local fan base. I’m just saying it’s got to happen for South Carolina this year,” he added.

Pate’s last remark was serious, though it sounded a bit humorous. If that surprise breakthrough doesn’t happen, the program is sure to face a tough time. It remains to be seen how they will catch up with everything once the season starts.
