Harold Carmichael’s journey to football greatness didn’t start at a top-ranked college or with a first-round draft pick. Instead, it began with his determination to prove himself at an HBCU, setting the foundation for a Hall of Fame career.
Recently, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Instagram post honoring Carmichael’s accomplishments sparked an outpouring of love from fans, sharing their thoughts on his legacy as both an Eagles legend and an HBCU success story.

“Much respect! HBCU greatness on full display,” another fan chimed in.
Many celebrated his perseverance, with one saying, “A long time coming, but he made it!”
“Eagles legend! Such a wonderful family as well,” Another fan added, praising his legacy as well as his heritage. This buzz in social media showed how deeply Carmichael’s journey resonated with football lovers and HBCU supporters alike.
Coming out of Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Carmichael wasn’t the first choice for Southern University’s football team. In fact, he wasn’t even recruited. But that didn’t stop him. He bought a train ticket, rode for 18 hours to Baton Rouge, and showed up with the actual recruits.
Initially overlooked, Carmichael’s persistence paid off. He walked onto the team and used his 6-foot-8 frame to dominate as a wide receiver. While he lacked elite speed, his catching ability set him apart.
His success at Southern paved the way for him to be selected by the Eagles in the seventh round of the 1971 NFL Draft, a position that many felt undervalued his talent.
Despite being a late-round pick, Carmichael went on to rewrite the Eagles’ record books. He remains the franchise leader in receptions (589), receiving yards (5,879), and receiving touchdowns (79).

Through all of his ups and downs, Carmichael remains deeply grateful for his time at Southern University.
“That HBCU experience, I’d do it over and over again if I had that opportunity,” he said. “I love what they did for me, the opportunity they gave me, and the love they showed towards me.”
As the Eagles prepare for another shot at Super Bowl glory, Carmichael will be in New Orleans, supporting his team and reflecting on the path that brought him here.
