The Sherrone Moore affair scandal has rocked the University of Michigan, leading to the football head coach’s firing and subsequent arrest. However, this one is just the latest scandal that Michigan has had over the last few years, and these happened with several sports, not just football. These scandals also all happened with Warde Manuel as the athletic director, with more scrutiny now coming his way.
It was under Warde Manuel that basketball coach Juwan Howard punched an opposing assistant coach and got suspended. It was also under Manuel that the Jim Harbaugh recruitment scandal and the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal happened.
With all of that, Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press appeared on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” podcast and spoke about what is happening on the ground over at the University of Michigan. He revealed that Moore’s “illicit relationship” with staffer Paige Shiver was known to many, and this has now drawn scrutiny towards Manuel.
“I think it’s got to be who knew what and when, right? I’ve spoken to a number of people in and around the athletic department, some who are currently there and in the university, some who are formerly there, and it’s sort of been characterized as a a poorly kept secret,” he said (11:52)
“I would imagine that they had heard some of the whispers and rumblings that I myself had heard over the past couple of months, and I had tried to to vet this out to the best of my ability in recent weeks and months,” he added.
Moore was fired after the school launched an investigation into his illicit affair. He was then arrested after breaking into his mistress’ home and threatening to harm himself. The school was reportedly already aware that Moore was dealing with mental health issues before they fired him.
