Sherrone Moore’s week has gone from chaotic to unprecedented. Shortly after being removed as Michigan’s head coach, the situation surrounding him escalated again when reports surfaced that he had been detained by police in Saline, Michigan.
The news broke through a series of updates from major outlets, each adding a piece to a situation that is still unfolding and far from resolved.
Dan Wetzel, ESPN senior writer reported that Moore had been located and detained by the Saline Police Department on Wednesday evening. According to Wetzel’s reporting, authorities then transferred Moore to the Pittsfield Township Police Department, where he is now the subject of an investigation into potential charges.

ESPN later received a statement from the Saline Police confirming their involvement in detaining Moore before turning him over to Pittsfield Township for further investigation.
“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” Saline Police said in a statement to ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”
The developing story gained another layer when Anthony Broome of The Wolverine provided clarification from the Washtenaw County Jail. According to Broome’s report, there were no booking records under Moore’s name as of today.

That detail confirms that Moore was detained but not formally arrested, and that no official charges have been filed at this stage. All indications suggest that law enforcement is still assessing the situation, leaving the public in a wait-and-see moment as the investigation continues.
This police involvement comes at a time when Moore was already facing intense scrutiny. His dismissal from Michigan set the stage for the turbulence now erupting around him. With a coaching future in jeopardy and legal questions emerging, the fallout from his firing has taken a dramatic turn in less than 24 hours.

Why Was Sherrone Moore Fired?
Michigan announced Moore’s dismissal earlier, ending his tenure before he could complete his first full year as the program’s head coach. The university stated that the firing was for cause following an internal investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
The findings concluded that Moore had violated university policy, leading to immediate termination and removal of all contractual protections tied to his deal. The firing also followed months of outside scrutiny. Earlier in the year, Moore was suspended amid the sign-stealing investigation.

When the internal investigation confirmed misconduct, Michigan acted swiftly, cutting ties and naming Biff Poggi interim head coach. Now, Moore is again under legal scrutiny, with police involvement and an active investigation underway.
