The Cleveland Browns have now officially made the final decisions regarding their quarterback room after an intense preseason battle. Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Dillon Gabriel, the third-round pick from this year’s draft, will serve as the backup to veteran Joe Flacco in the 2025 season opener.
Shedeur Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, who received plenty of hype this offseason, will now start the season as the third-string quarterback for Cleveland.

NFL fans, especially NFL fans who had hoped Sanders would have progressed more quickly up the depth chart when you consider the success he had in college.
Gabriel’s Preseason Performance Secures The Edge Over Sanders
Choosing Gabriel over Sanders is based largely on Gabriel performing well during preseason action when he completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 272 yards and 1 TD to go with 1 interception. But more than anything his selection is probably because Stefanski felt confident he could do the job at the highest level despite Shedeur’s decent all-round performance.
Sanders despite a prestigious college background and hype from the media, struggled in the later games in preseason and also had some minor injuries during training camp. The fifth-round pick will be placed in a developmental role with the possibility of being the emergency QB if needed.
With both Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel being preferred over Sanders, it will be interesting to see what changes occur during the season.
