Shedeur Sanders Rallies to Joe Flacco’s Defense as Fan Tries To Stir Controversy

Former Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders is starting his career in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. He was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft after previously being projected as a high first-round pick. Despite his draft fall, Sanders has taken a positive attitude with him to Cleveland.

On Thursday, Sanders had an amusing interaction with a fan at a KFC drive-thru. Sanders was working the drive-thru as part of a brand partnership with the fast food chain. When a fan came through, he jokingly besmirched veteran Browns quarterback Joe Flacco.

“Hey, Joe Flacco ain’t sh*t,” the fan said.

“Nah bro don’t flack on my man’s though,” Shedeur Sanders said.

    The fan then responded:

“But I like Shedeur more though, you feel me?”

    Shedeur laughed before responding:

    “Yeah that’s my man though.”

Shedeur Sanders and Joe Flacco Are Two of Four Quarterbacks Competing for Cleveland’s Starting Job Next Season

The reason the fan was causing a bit of drama with Joe Flacco is because of the complicated quarterback situation in Cleveland. With Deshaun Watson expected to miss significant time with an injury, the starting QB position needs to be filled.

Rather than going out and getting a definitive starting QB for next season, the Browns brought in four quarterbacks who are competing for the role. They brought in two veterans, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, during the offseason. Flacco is a former Super Bowl-winning QB, but is 40 years old and his play has declined. Pickett was a first-round pick in 2022 but has not had much success in the NFL thus far.

The Browns also drafted two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL draft, and Shedeur Sanders was not even the first one picked. Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel was selected in the third round of the draft. So, those four QBs are competing for the starting role.

Flacco appears to be the likely favorite to win the starting job to start the season. However, analyst Emmanuel Acho spoke about Sanders’ odds of winning the starting role after he was drafted in the spring.

“Shedeur can win that starting job,” Acho said. “I believe he can win it halfway through the season. I don’t suggest he’ll start at the beginning of the season.”
