The Browns originally held picks No. 166 and No. 192 in the 2024 NFL Draft. They traded both to the Seahawks to move up to No. 144 in the fifth round. With that pick, the Browns selected Shedeur Sanders, the quarterback from the Colorado Buffaloes. It was a bold and commendable move by Cleveland, but the situation wasn’t as smooth as it looked.
Once projected as a first-round pick, Shedeur’s slide to No. 144 overall resulted in a huge decline in earnings for the young star. It was also a setback for his father, Deion Sanders, especially since rumors about Deion possibly becoming an NFL head coach had been circulating for a while. However, with his son’s significant drop in the draft, those rumors seem to have ultimately faded.

Deion Sanders to the NFL Coaching? Why Insiders Now Say It Was All Just Hype
The rumors about Deion Sanders possibly becoming an NFL head coach have been around for a while, especially due to his success in turning around struggling programs and his legendary Hall of Fame playing career.
Before Sanders arrived, Jackson State had six consecutive losing seasons. Then, he led the team to back-to-back SWAC titles, finishing as one of the top-ranked HBCU programs before heading to Colorado.
The Buffaloes’ record was also devastating before Coach Prime took charge. They had a disastrous 1-11 season in 2022. In 2023, he completely rebuilt the roster, bringing in top recruits and transfers, including his son, Shedeur Sanders, and Travis Hunter. Colorado started the 2023 season 3-0, earning a Top 20 ranking for the first time since 2018.
These magnificent achievements led some to believe that if Shedeur was drafted high, an NFL team might offer Deion a coaching opportunity to guide his son professionally. However, Shedeur’s fall to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft seems to have shut down those rumors, at least for now. This led analysts to believe that the Deion-to-NFL narrative was never real.
“One of the beautiful sorry arcs of Shedeur Sanders going in the 5th round is that the ‘Deion becoming the head coach’ narrative never exists, anymore.”

Jonathan Peterlin says Shedeur’s draft position has ended all speculation about his father jumping to the pros. “One of the beautiful sorry arcs of Shedeur Sanders going in the 5th round is that the ‘Deion becoming the head coach’ narrative never exists, anymore,” Peterlin said in a discussion with Nick Wilson.
While the rumors may be shut down for now, there’s a strong possibility that speculation about him coaching an NFL team will rise again.
If Shedeur performs well in the coming season with the Browns, it could increase his future earnings and bring back rumors of his father becoming an NFL coach. We must keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
