Shedeur Sanders Declares Why He’s Built to Win the QB Throne At Cleveland

In the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders had quite the slide before finally getting picked up by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round. Sanders was originally predicted to be a first-round talent selected off the board. However, for one reason or another, Sanders slid to the fifth round.

Now, Sanders has his next home figured out. After making a name for himself at the University of Colorado, Sanders is now focused on winning the starting quarterback job in Cleveland. To do so, he must compete with Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Shedeur Sanders Breaks Down the Tools, Mindset, and Support Behind His QB Edge

Confident and focused on winning the starting job for his new team, Shedeur Sanders explains why he’s ahead of the pack in the race for quarterback dominance and declares why he’s built to win the quarterback throne at Cleveland.

“Well, of course it’s day by day,” Sanders said to reporters about competing for the Cleveland starting job, as well as starting his NFL career at the same time. “I just find something I want to perfect and just perfect it to the best of my abilities, and that’s all I really focus on.”

“And just being there, just being a leader, being a great teammate, doing what I need to do whenever it is. So I’m just thankful for an opportunity. Things could have been a lot worse, but I’m here smiling in front of you all at this facility right now.”

“I was truly thankful,” Sanders said. “I was truly thankful for it, including him. It was a lot of fans, a lot of people in barbershops, a lot of hairstylists. There was a lot of just fans of me and of my craft and of my family that was there to support. So I was just thankful that I have that foundation overall just as people and we all could come together as one.”

While it’s easy to get lost in the noise, Sanders told reporters that his mindset on trying to win the starting job is simple: “I just feel like in life and everything it’s just me versus me. I can’t control any other decision besides that. So, I just try to be my best self at all times.”

“By doing what my dad raised me to do since I was five-years old,” Sanders tells media about competing for the starting job. “I see what he was able to do. I have a lot of great resources and mentors to keep me on the right track. Especially coming into this building. We have great coaches in this building, able to keep me focused and keep me on a straight and narrow line.
Overall, while the quarterback competition won’t be easy, Sanders is excited for the competition. It remains to be see who wins the starting job, but both Sanders and Gabriel have extremely bright futures in the NFL, whether it be in Cleveland or somewhere else in a few years from now.
