Shannon Sharpe Chimes Back, Saying, “I Just Said You Weren’t Time”

“Nobody will ever say Asante Samuel and Deion Sanders in the same breath,” Sharpe said.

This was one of the comments made by Sharpe on the “Nightcap” podcast as the debate over who is the better cornerback, Asante Samuel or Deion Sanders.

Sanders and Samuel are dead even with the number of Super Bowls won, which is two. Sanders won his with San Francisco in 1994 and the Dallas Cowboys the following year.

Samuel won his Super Bowl in 2004 with the Patriots and again in 2007.

Sharpe distinguished the two players based on the individual accolades each accumulated, and Samuel pointed out that he had only two fewer interceptions in 35 fewer games than Sanders.

Sharpe also said to stack the best players at the cornerback position of all time, which includes Sanders and where Samuel ranks among them.

“We got Time, We got Revus, We got Mel Blunt, We got Rod Woodson, We got Daryl Green, We got Williams. We have seven right there,” Sharpe said. “In the history of the NFL is he (Samuel) cracking the top 10?”

Sharpe mentioned that he was the game’s best tight end once he retired because he held all the records.

The point was to show Samuel that Sharpe knew his limitations against some of the best players at his position, tight end, and that Samuel should know that he can’t compare to Sanders.

Ryan Clark is now an analyst on Monday Night Football and appears on podcasts such as the “Pivot” Podcast.

His 12-year NFL career included winning Super Bowl 43 and the 2011 Pro Bowl. He had this to say about Samuel.

“Let’s not stat watch, Asante. Let’s not throw rocks at a tank. You were good, you played zone well, you had good eyes,” Clark said. “But we cut the film on and you get cooked because your eyes as good as they were in zone, they were bad in man. You can get double moved. There is no ‘hall of very good.’”

Like Sharpe, what distinguished Sanders was that he won back-to-back Super Bowls with different teams.
