“He’ll Jump Into the Transfer Portal”: Shannon Sharpe Questions Deion Sanders’ Old-School Discipline Style at Colorado

Shannon Sharpe’s recent comments on the Nightcap show discussed the increasing suspicion regarding whether traditional coaching methods can survive in an era where players have more mobility than ever before.

In addressing Colorado coach Deion Sanders‘ disciplinary style, traditional, old school rules in practice, Sharpe did not hold back regarding the present landscape of college football. The Hall of Fame tight end felt strongly that there was little chance players will be punished in any traditional sense when they, and have always had flexible exit strategies.

“Yeah I don’t know if this style of punishment would work, Because some guys are already looking,” Sharpe stated bluntly during the show. (20:55)

    He added:

“You can’t really coach a kid now, you coach him hard and he’ll jump into the transfer portal.”

The long-time broadcaster continued on to discuss how thin-skinned players have become when it comes to criticism from coaches.

“You tick him off or he didn’t get as many reps as though or targets as he thought or plays as he thought, he’ll jump in the portal. And that’s just the era we’re living in,” Sharpe explained.

Although Shannon Sharpe was worried about Deion Sanders’ coaching limitations, he acknowledged that Coach Prime was just trying to make a point and he didn’t want his players to hurt each other.

Deion Sanders Enters Third Season at Colorado With Roster Turnover

Coach Prime will begin his third full year as head football coach at Colorado State University, the Buffaloes, and have continued to show improvement each year. The Buffaloes improved from a one-win team to a nine-win total during his second season in 2024. This has been the best record under Coach Prime’s tenure. The Buffaloes will kick off 2025’s season against Georgia Tech on August 29 at Folsom.

There will be a big shake-up for the Buffaloes that will occur this season. Both Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, NFL-bound players, are no longer on the team, and there is much change in the roster from the past three years. Sanders now has to coach the team without his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, who were both significant contributors to the team’s success.

Sanders does have support in the veteran coaching staff, including Robert Livingston, Pat Shurmur, Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk and Byron Leftwich. The Athletic has tabbed Sanders a “rising star” in college football coaching, meaning people across the country are starting to recognize his program-development abilities.
